Remembering Martha

MARTHA B . SMITH SET A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE DURING HER MORE THAN 30 YEARS IN HEALTH CARE AT HAWAI ‘ I PACIFIC HEALTH ( HPH ). She passed away in March 2021 at the age of 63 . Employees fondly remember her efficient but always compassionate leadership , which drew people to her .
Martha was best known for her decades of service as the top executive at Kapi ‘ olani Medical Center for Women & Children . Most recently she led HPH as executive vice president of O ‘ ahu operations . In this position , she served as the CEO of Kapi ‘ olani Medical Center for Women & Children , Straub Medical Center and Pali Momi Medical Center . It was a role she held with immense pride and dedication .
Martha ‘ s impressive career includes countless accolades for her and Kapi ‘ olani , but her proudest moments were celebrating the children and families she loved to serve . She never stopped finding ways to deliver new programs and technology that would save the lives of women and children . She found motivation through events including Kapi ‘ olani ‘ s
prom , which hosts patients who recovered from illnesses and injuries , and she initiated big check presentations for children who raised money for Kapi ‘ olani , no matter if they donated $ 10 or $ 1,000 for the hospital .
Every contribution was personal for Martha . She always took the time to hand write cards to thank individual donors and the hundreds of HPH staffers who participated in the Employee Giving Campaigns .
Perhaps one of her most significant accomplishments at HPH was her leadership role in developing the Diamond Head Tower at Kapi ‘ olani . It was her vision to create the preeminent health care center for women and children in Hawai ‘ i and the Pacific , and to build a space for patients , families and staff that supports family-centered care . She was at the heart of fundraising for the project in the Campaign for Hawai ‘ i ‘ s Children . It will be part of Martha ‘ s considerable legacy .
But the legacy most of us at HPH will remember was how Martha worked tirelessly and expected the same from those around her . At the same time , she was extremely thoughtful and caring , always wanting the best for our patients . She is missed dearly .
Martha is survived by her husband Tony , son Ian , two grandsons and other family members . In her honor , Martha ‘ s family has requested that all contributions and gifts be made to Kapi ‘ olani Health Foundation . You can make your donation at Give2Kapiolani . org / MarthaSmith .
