Frank & Russie’ s Little Big Adventures Chapter 4
Frank & Russie’ s Little Big Adventures Chapter 4
Hi from Oxford. We arrived yesterday afternoon and checked into a local B & B. If you don’ t know, B & B stands for Bed & Breakfast. That’ s a small guest house where you can stay in England. B & B’ s are usually quite pricey so you really need to check the offers before you book. Russie and I got lucky because we booked rooms in a lovely thatched cottage in the outskirts of Oxford at a great price.
It’ s 10 am and the sun is shining. I have to admit it’ s quite unusual so we decide to spend the day outside. Our first stop is the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, which is the oldest botanic garden in Great Britain and one of the oldest scientific gardens in the world. It was founded in 1621 to grow plants for medical research and nowadays contains over 8,000 different plant species. I feel overwhelmed by the variety of beautiful flowers and herbs and almost get lost among the palm trees and ferns. It feels like being in the jungle. Did I hear a monkey screaming?
After this fantastic walk in the beautiful Garden, we head to the local Magdalen Bridge Boathouse. Luckily it’ s only down the road. My legs are killing me! We decide to hire a punt for an hour. Since we don’ t feel very strong, a local guide helps us with the pole. As the punt glides along the canal, we enjoy the lovely view of the local colleges and of course the peaceful meadow of Christ Church College. Russie tells me that Lewis Carroll taught here in the 19th century. I can understand why he got inspired to write his famous book“ Alice in Wonderland”.
It’ s 4 o’ clock and we are quite tired. Russie notices a Tea House nearby and says:
“ Frank, I’ ve got an idea and I’ m sure you’ ll love it!”
She adds she wants to surprise me and I can see that she is taking me to the Tea House. I don’ t want to admit that I am starving but I hope the surprise will be yummy.
When we enter the Tea House I can smell something being baked. A lovely lady approaches us and asks what we would like to have. Russie says“ Cream Tea”. I frowned. I thought we were going to eat something, not drinking only tea with cream … Seems disgusting to me. I can hear my tummy rumbling.
Five minutes later the kind waitress brings our order. I can’ t believe it. We have a cup of English tea and something which
