Faces behind the voices New VI sports team in Gloucestershire By Monica Farthing Insight have joined the Goalball revolution In the Insight Magazine we often talk about the Theatre group attending Audio Described (AD) performances at The Everyman, so for this issue we thought we would find out more and go behind the scenes! Judy Williams and Jenny Wicks are the Ladies that you hear and they took on the role nearly 3 years ago. Jenny has a background in directing, and Judy has a sister who is visual impaired, so they both came to the role from different perspectives of what is important to the listener of the play. The process of describing a performance begins with seeing the play beforehand to learn what elements are integral to the understanding of the plot lines, themes and atmosphere. “You have to work out what is important for the audience to know. For instance in a play, if someone pulls a gun out, that would change the whole atmosphere on stage”. One of the regulars that use the service is Mrs Howse, she explains that at the start of the play you are briefed about what characters are wearing and the setting of the stage which helps to understand the premise of the opening act. 8 2014 · Issue 11 The Audio Description service “is excellent, my sight is awful and I find it helps tremendously.
