The Highbury Club review
A world without volunteers
By Chris Chapman
By Susan Gregory
It has been a busy year at The
Highbury Club, which meets in the
afternoon on the first Wednesday
of each month at Highbury
Congregational Church. If you
would like to join the club, please

Club Members have enjoyed varied
entertainment at meetings, together
with a cream tea on board the
Gloucestershire and Warwickshire
Steam Railway, which is highly
recommended if you are looking for
ideas for trips out. In August, Blooms
Garden Centre was the venue, with
15-year-old Sam Strachan playing
guitar and singing‘60’s hits. A record
attendance of members “rocked the
joint”!
The club owes a great deal to the
dedication and support of a great
band of award-winning volunteers.
This is reflected by the poem written
by one of our members and dictated
over the phone, so I hope that I’ve
got it right!
Ode to Club Volunteers
No volunteer will ever see
The welcome they bring to impaired folk like me
Without them we’d be sitting depressed at home
Problems forbid us ever to roam
A knock at the door and we can come awake
A volunteer is waiting for us; to a club they will take
We’re shy
