idol video? Yeah, we’ve done a traditional country music medley at the shows for the last couple of years. I try to pick songs and artists that influenced me growing up. I guess it is kind of hard because there’s so many of them, but we have a good time doing that. You just don’t hear that kind of music much anymore. Do you have many people tell you they haven’t heard of some of these songs, given that you're a young guy and you've got a good share of young audience members? There’s probably not a lot of 20 or 30-year-olds that’ve heard “King of the Road” played live. Yeah, I get that a lot actually, and it’s something I kind of take pride in, that I kind of play teacher to these kids. I was raised differently, I was raised on that kind of INSIGHT music, listening with my parents and my grandparents in the 90s and 2000s. So yeah, it’s pretty cool. A lot of the time I’ll talk to artists, and I’ll ask them why they play the kind of music they do. I know that you grew up listening to country music of a certain time, but the thing that grabs me is that your voice sounds like it was made for it. Did you ever try to be a rock singer and just decide, “Country’s where it’s at for my voice”? Yeah, I think if I would’ve tried to do anything I’d have tried to be like Elvis back in the day, but he was kind of like country, had that influence. Country’s one of those things, you can’t just sing it, you’ve got to be it, and that was how I was raised, so it kind of came naturally. September 2016 19
