idol video?
Yeah, we’ve done a traditional country music
medley at the shows for the last couple of
years. I try to pick songs and artists that
influenced me growing up. I guess it is kind of
hard because there’s so many of them, but we
have a good time doing that. You just don’t
hear that kind of music much anymore.
Do you have many people tell you they
haven’t heard of some of these songs,
given that you're a young guy and you've
got a good share of young audience
members? There’s probably not a lot of 20
or 30-year-olds that’ve heard “King of the
Road” played live.
Yeah, I get that a lot actually, and it’s
something I kind of take pride in, that I kind
of play teacher to these kids. I was raised
differently, I was raised on that kind of
INSIGHT
music, listening with my parents and my
grandparents in the 90s and 2000s. So yeah, it’s
pretty cool.
A lot of the time I’ll talk to artists, and
I’ll ask them why they play the kind of
music they do. I know that you grew up
listening to country music of a certain
time, but the thing that grabs me is that
your voice sounds like it was made for it.
Did you ever try to be a rock singer and
just decide, “Country’s where it’s at for my
voice”?
Yeah, I think if I would’ve tried to do anything
I’d have tried to be like Elvis back in the day, but
he was kind of like country, had that influence.
Country’s one of those things, you can’t just
sing it, you’ve got to be it, and that was how I
was raised, so it kind of came naturally.
