coach a veteran right now who ’ s getting back into running and cycling ,” Savre says . “ I coach other athletes as well . . . We try to help some of the veterans with a little bit of knowledge of getting back on the bike and some training tips and tricks that they can use .”
While Project Echelon Racing is based out of Milwaukee , WI , the cyclists come from all over the world , and Savre says it ’ s very important for the riders to work as a team . The team recently had the opportunity to bond at a winter training camp in Arizona . “ We tried to not only race but go bowling , do some things to kind of get to know each other and form a team relationship ,” Savre says . “ You definitely need to have that cohesion and work together to ultimately get on the podium or get a result .”
Savre says the sport of cycling , in general , is kind of a small world , “ There ’ s probably only 200 guys that they ’ re racing at the Pro 1 level , the type of guys that will be at Sunny King . So we really know almost everybody . . . We , at least , recognize who they are and have talked to them probably a couple of times .”
In fact , Savre is now living in Arizona with a few other cyclists who aren ’ t on his team . “ It ’ s kind of cool how we ’ re all sharing an apartment and training together and living together even though we ’ re not teammates because we ’ re all still pursuing the same goal .”
As Savre chases his cycling goals he makes the point that it is important to lead a balanced life . “ I feel like some people get so focused they kind of forget to enjoy the experience ,” he says . “ For instance , we go in town for races and if you ’ re there for the race you kinda want to put your feet up and relax , but I think it ’ s also important to kinda get out and see the town and enjoy the experience because someday we won ’ t be able to keep doing what we ’ re doing .”
Savre remembers his last visit to Anniston saying , “ We went out to the race and then I think we had dinner afterward like right on the main street there it was a good experience ... Anniston did a really good job the last time I was there and we appreciate that , and we ’ re excited to come back .”
