Judges keep an eye out for smart answers and honesty , and according to Yates , it ’ s the interview process where pageants are won and lost , with some competitions ranking interview questions up to 40 percent of the total score . A girl doesn ’ t necessarily have to be “ prettiest ” to win , and given the subjective nature of beauty , it ’ s risky to bank on looks and ignore interview skills , which is where Yates says many girls start to find their personalities and self-esteem .
“ It ’ s preparing her for life , preparing her for college ,” said Yates of daughter Owens and the experience she ’ s gained from pageantry . “ She ’ ll be able to go into the world , into an interview — most people , even getting out of college , don ’ t even know how to interview for a job . It ’ s a life lesson .”
Miss Calhoun County is May 14 at 5 p . m . at Word Alive Church , 122 Allendale Road , Oxford . Entry is open to ages 0-21 . The evening includes singers , dance and a playground for young children .
