by Benjamin Nunnally
T
his year marks the first annual Legend of Lickskillet Music and Heritage
Festival, a community gathering in
downtown Oxford that focuses on bringing
the history, heritage and cultural impact of
Oxford to its residents and guests from out
of town.
The Lickskillet Festival takes its name from a
quote attributed to an anonymous traveler
visiting Oxford long before it had that name;
when asked whether he’d gotten enough to
eat after visiting one of the local businessmen, the traveler responded, “Yes, but I had
to lick the skillet.” Seeing as even then the
people of Oxford had a sense of humor, they
stuck with the name for a time, before outgrowing the modest settlement that the traveler had visited.
The festival features a focus on community,
