up. I played two shows as Killer Cam and
the Invisible Man, and the invisible man
was Trace pressing play to my tracks. That’s
when I had the idea to blend the songs as a
whole and make the mixtape. Beach Party
took off after that and it was the last thing
on my mind.
What led to the song choices?
It started two years ago, writing songs
down, this is something I want to use for
the tape. Beach Party was going to cover
“Heartbeat” by Childish Gambino and I
called it for my mixtape. They were like,
“Oh, so you’re going to do that?” Two years
later, here it is. There’s stuff I ended up using in other ways, like “When I’m 64” by
the Beatles was originally at the end of the
mixtape, and I had so much fun playing it
I just had them let it go until the end. I put
that out by itself on Tumblr. I’m doing it by
myself. I’ve never done anything like this by
myself and it’s scary. Of course, I can’t sell it,
I don’t own the music. I just want to make

the music for me. I’ve always loved hip-hop
and R&B, even with Beach Party and any
band I’ve been in I’ve kept a hip-hop frame
of mind, the beats, keep it simple and then
add on to that.
I noticed that the tape isn’t, I wouldn’t
call it reserved, but it’s like you decided
to do your best to make the music sound
good instead of showing out and making it about you.
Everybody is always talking about not ripping it up and going nuts and saying, “You
didn’t go crazy and we know you can.”
I think there are two reasons I didn’t go
ham: I didn’t want to overcomplicate it, I
just want to put it out and let people know
Cam the Invisible Man is alive and he’s out
there. I want to try and get gigs with it,
other bands and studio work, a way to say,
“Here I am, here’s what I can play to and I
know how to back off.” And I wanted it to
be something that everyone could listen
to, something your mom can listen to, your
