before long she had opened three more stores there in Georgia.” Having had the opportunity to meet people within the Smallcakes company, the Greens sat down and decided this was something they could do. “The summer of 2013 we started getting the ball rolling,” Jason says. They got their son enrolled in Oxford City School, and tag-teamed for a few months to get the business up and running. “On my off days I would come over and we would kind of pass each other on the interstate and high- five,” he says. Jason left the police department on Halloween, and by Thanksgiving, Smallcakes Cupcakery Oxford opened. A degree in interior design gave Jennifer a leg up when it came to designing the store. The Greens say they were given a lot of freedom with how they wanted to decorate and present their business. “Every store you INSIGHT go in will look different,” Jennifer says. While all Smallcakes cupcake recipes are the same across the country, the Greens do have some wiggle room to be creative. “Outside of cupcakes we’ve got the liberty to play with cakes and whatever else we want to play with,” Jason says. “Even the flavor,” Jennifer added. “You’ll see some stores won’t have the same daily flavors that we do.” Jason bakes fresh cupcakes every day and says that he has always liked to cook. “Im comfortable in a kitchen,” he says. “Cooking regular food and these is a little different. When I’m at home cooking regular food it’s a little pinch of this, a little pinch of that, but this is a little more precise, especially with the liquids.” Aside from providing consistently delicious products, the Greens care deeply about providing exceptional customer service. “I’ve added it up and [Jason] is down here March 2018 27
