Q : Can we talk about the author side of you ?
A : I wrote a book that came out last October , it ’ s called Fred the New Orleans Drummer Boy . It was kind of a Cowboy Mouth show in children ’ s book form . One of the players in little Fred ’ s band is scared to play his first show , and the other kids say to him “ Don ’ t get scared , get excited , turn the energy around ”. It ’ s very celebratory .
Q : Other than writing and producing , is there any other media you ever thought about trying ? Maybe movies , writing scripts ,
band was an inauguration into life . I had never traveled or played music outside of New Orleans . Then I met Bill Davis , a talented guitar player , and we really clicked musically . We could finish each others sentences . He was looking for a new drummer , and then he called me and we decided to do it . Bill had a vision to get out of Southern New Orleans , which was basically unheard of . He wanted to go to places like Birmingham and Atlanta , and he had the drive to do it . All of a sudden , it became a very successful act . Especially in the East and Southeast . It was an insane adventure . These two guys had never been in anything that anyone payed attention to , and all of a sudden we ’ re opening shows for The Replacements , Circle Jerks , Los Lobos , things like that . We did a lot of stuff like that . We did a whole tour with this band called the DD ’ s , who were very big at
the time . All of a sudden , we went from being this little band that would play three sets on a Wednesday night for a few dollars and some beer , to being something . I was very focused , and the other guys were just having fun . It was pretty crazy because we had no idea what we were doing .
