The North Alabama Wine Trail
stretches over 75 miles of the lower Appalachians , from Albertville in the north to Heflin in the south . The six vineyards along the trail have beautiful , wide-open spaces for growing grapes and the other fruit that goes into their wines , offering tastings , tours and events throughout the year .

Fruithurst Winery Co . traces its heritage all the way back to the late 1890s , when the Alabama Fruit Growers and Winery Association bought land and turned 3,000 acres into vineyards and orchards , naming the area Fruithurst . The winery is run by two cousins , and features wines from red and white to blueberry and strawberry , in dry and sweet varieties .

Offers more than 40 wines , with many affordable options and some specialties that are a bit more expensive , but worthwhile for the quality and novelty . Included in the wine list is chocolate-covered cherry , white chocolate and peanut-butter cup , alongside traditional favorites like muscadine and strawberry .
❧ Jules J . Berta Winery

Founded by a Hungarian refugee in the late 80s , Jules J . Berta winery is rooted in the American Dream . Four generations of Bertas have had a hand in maintaining the vineyard , which offers traditional red and white wines , as well as a fruit variety . Among their award-winning wines is Black Widow , a spicy oak and cherry-flavored red .

What ’ s in a name ? Owner Jim Lee named his vineyard for his four granddaughters ; Anna Mae , Bella Rae , Savannah Elise and Jessika Lauren — Maraella , if you take the first two letters of their middle names all together . While the name is a fun coincidence , the wine is the result of hard work on Lee ’ s part to make wine grapes work in Alabama soil . Included in his stock are riesling , chardonnay , cabernet and more .
