A mericans love holidays, and if there’s any way in which they’re lacking, it’s that they only come once per year. Fortunately, we as a society have all agreed that weekly holidays can be accepted: Throwback Thursdays, Manic Mondays (this one may be a bit out of use) and somewhat recently, Taco Tuesday. There’s no definite best day of the week, but Tuesday becoming centered around tacos definitely gives it an edge in any calendar contest. We decided to take a look at restaurants in Calhoun County that indulge our taco needs, and there are three that stood out: Loco Mex comes with cheese and lettuce, though there’s a definite focus on meat in the sizable tacos. Drink specials run throughout the day as well, with discounted margaritas and $.99 beers to wash everything down. Add in an evening of trivia starting at about 7 p.m. and guests can truly make a night of it. If you happen to stop by, say hello to Julia Powell, who may be one of the friendliest servers in the county and and a resident Taco Tuesday expert. Cielito Lindo One of Calhoun County’s more authentic Mexican restaurants, Cielito Lindo tacos may seem simple for patrons who are used to tons of cheese, sour cream and other addons. Instead, the restaurant serves $.99 softshelled tacos with only meat, from steak, pork and chicken to shrimp, fish, and chorizo (with tripe and tongue, for the brave). It’s up to the diner to decide how they want to dress their food when they take a trip to the salsa bar. Salsas range from spicy to lethal, depending on your temperament, along with pico de gallo, lettuce, tomato, onion and others. Rack and Roll Billiards This Jacksonville hotspot makes Taco Tuesday into a true event, with not only $.99 tacos, but drink specials and trivia in the evening. Tacos are discounted throughout the day, with beef and shredded chicken tacos for $.99 and steak, grilled chicken and shrimp available for a bit more. Every taco INSIGHT Anniston’s favorite sports bar pairs $2 tacos with $2 Coronas from 3 p.m. to closing time, with sports highlights playing on televisions around the restaurant and pool tables for those who like a little sport with their dinner. Tacos include steak, pork, fish and chicken, with corn tortillas for something a little different. ✻ July 2016 17
