Martin remembers traveling to South America for research and the release he felt after the plane took off . “ There would be all of these ‘ have to ’ just absolutely imperative kind of to-do lists that you thought you had no choice about , but once you boarded the plane and you felt it lift off - that ’ s compartmentalizing - you can say ‘ Alright , now I can ’ t do a thing about all of that , so right now I ’ m flying to South America . I loved it then , I love it now because it ’ s the same thing , you focus .”
Since 2001 , Martin has led photographic safaris to Kenya , Tanzania , and South America . “ Every trip there are things that are memorable that you ’ ve never seen anything like ,” he describes . “ The Africa photo safari is one of the best escapes in the world .” He says those trips fulfill part of what he experienced as a researcher . “ Tropical medicine will take you places that you couldn ’ t imagine , and you got to really see the world as a more complicated and much more varied kind of place to live than what we have .”
From his career in tropical medicine research to his lifelong love of painting , it ’ s clear that Martin ’ s view of the world around him is what makes it possible for him to share his beautiful creations with us .
