make perfect sense after you figure them
out.”
Two of tonight’s players, sisters Zana and
Mikaela Vaughn, shared “aha” moments as
Bunn led them through puzzles between
sessions, explaining where the team had
almost made the right connections and
objects they’d missed. Nearly every puzzle
required picking up and looking objects
over thoroughly, something that Bunn says
new players are hesitant to do, which Zana
echoes after the game.
“Everything is a clue and everything has a
purpose, and I didn’t have that mentality
going in,” said Zana.
Organizations have already taken notice
of escape rooms as a quick, fun way to get
their people thinking critically and working
together as a team. A class of teenaged tae

kwon do students will be heading into the
ship in the next session, for example, and
a group of firefighters have booked time
for recreational team-building in the next
week or so.
Tonight’s game served as job training for
Mikaela, who just joined Escape Zone’s
staff and wanted to experience rooms
from the player’s point of view before her
official start date. Though play went a little
haywire, she says she had a good time and
is excited to start working in the control
room.
“I’m excited to watch people play and see
them build bonds together,” she said.
