ust before Black Cat Bone jumps
into their next song, guitarist Dave
Bergquist tells keyboardist Ed Protho
to dial in an organ sound for the tune.
“You can’t go wrong with a Hammond B3,”
said Bergquist, with a grin.
Drummer Wes Corn counts in a beat, and
the band jumps in on “Whipping Post,” an
original song written by guitarist Shannon
Deese, who sings on the track. The tune is a
foot-stomper with a little Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine running
in its veins.

can’t go wrong with a Hammond.
Black Cat Bone got their start four years ago,
when Corn and Bergquist reunited to perform again, having once been in a metal out
fit together in the 80s. Corn brought along
Borders from a previous band, and the three
picked up Protho, who had been performing
in Hawaii for years, soon after. Deese is a recent addition, a rhythm guitarist and writer
for the band. The quintet just performed
some of their originals at the Model City Music Festival in July, opening up for Michael
