Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical
“Oklahoma!” gets star treatment from CAST
for a two week engagement, taking the story of hard-won love to the stage at the McClellan Auditorium.
The show follows the love lives of farmgirl
Laurey and her would-be boyfriend, Curly,
their friends Will and Annie, the traveling
salesman Ali and demented farmhand Jud,
who wants Laurey as his own. A handful of
flirtatious mistakes made by the young ladies spin out of control until Ali and Annie
are nearly forced to wed, Laurey becomes
entangled with Jud, and midway through a
dream ballet sequence for Laurey to try and
sort out the situation. While the wholesome
technicolor of the 1955 film version might
lend one to think of the show as outdated,
surprises abound throughout.
The show runs April 23 through May 3 at 7:30
every night, except Sundays, when it runs at
The classic tale of Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera
and Shere Khan comes to life on stage with
the CharACTers production of “Disney’s The
Jungle Book,” complete with favorite songs
like “The Bare Necessities” and “I Wanna Be
Like You,” with costumes and theatrics to
match. CharACTers has a history of making
big, Broadway-style productions, with set
pieces like the giant dragon of “Shrek” and a
full-sized, moving Oz head for “The Wizard of
Oz.”
“Disney’s The Jungle Book” runs April 24-26,
with 9 AM and 7:30 PM showings on April
24, a 7:30 presentation on April 25 and a 2:30
show April 26 at Wallace Hall in Gadsden.
