singing drummer who plays standing up makes a standout centerpiece to rip-roaring guitar and bass. DARK HORSE SALOON > 5:15-6:00 — Exs and Ohs > 2:00-2:45 — Sweet Southern Comfort Anniston/Gadsden punk pop rock. They’ve been away from the stage for a while, so this will be one to catch as the guys readjust to stage entertainment (read: rocking out). > 6:00-6:45 — V8 Death Car Lo-fi punk rock and roll from Montgomery, with songs full of dangerous women, sing along choruses and hand claps to keep it catchy. > 4:00-4:45 — Jeff and Nate Acoustic singer-songwriters with a dark twinge. > 6:00-6:45 — Jon Hanson > 8:45-9:30 — The Mystery Men? Anonymous purveyors of surf rock, masked men from beyond the horizon, surfing to destinations unknown. Reverb, splashy cymbals and plenty of tremolo bar work on the guitar work with the masks to give off a secret agent vibe that’s too good to miss. > 9:30-10:15 — McPherson Struts Local workhorses McPherson Struts strut their cowpunk credentials to close out the Smoking Moose portion of the evening; a Acoustic guitar and mandolin accompany some of the finest vocal harmonies Calhoun County has to offer, as the duo perform classic cover songs and kick things off at the Dark Horse Saloon. Spacey, ephemeral and unrestrained cosmic jams; deeply experimental and unabashedly weird, but you’re only ever going to hear one musician like Hanson, and he’s it. > 8:00-8:45 — Ricky Carden Pop-rock with strong songwriting sensibilities set Carden’s work apart, with thematically deep tracks like “20 Leagues” working as strong contenders for radio play and singalongs. ✤ April 2015 INSIGHT
