WELCOME
NSW is less than a year away from introducing a 10-cent refund
container deposit scheme - the scheme will introduce a valuable
fundraising stream for schools, charities, and community groups
and help to significantly reduce the estimated 160 million drink
containers littered in NSW every year.
The scheme will apply to most drink containers between
150ml and three litres. It will be the single largest initiative
ever undertaken to reduce litter in NSW and we think it’s an
absolute bottler of an idea.
It will help clean up our streets, beaches and waterways and
make a major contribution to achieving one of the Premier’s
12 priorities, to reduce the volume of litter by 40% by 2020.
This scheme is just one way the NSW government is
transforming the state’s waste and recycling network.
Since 2014, the government has awarded more than
$270 million to 653 projects to support waste infrastructure,
local government and industry projects, litter and illegal
dumping initiatives and waste reduction for business,
problem waste and organics under its flagship $465.7 million
Waste Less Recycle More initiative.
The investment so far is expected to create about 740 jobs
and divert more 1.9 million tonnes of waste from landfill.
I believe everyone has a responsibility to manage their waste
and improve their recycling practices. The government’s
Waste Less Recycle More initiative encourages communities
to think differently about waste avoidance, recycling, littering,
and illegal dumping.
It aims to ensure waste services are accessible to everyone so
households and business can do the right thing. And it also looks
at new regulatory approaches, which protect the environment
and support investment in new waste programs.
