From the CEO’ s desk
Since commencing my role with WMAA, one of the concerns raised by members with me was the significant impact Financial Assurances( FAs) have upon the operation of their businesses. Given the small margins that most businesses operate on, this is a significant issue for our industry. Any capital tied up in providing surety to the EPA can have a real impact upon cash flows.
In addition, until now, there has been limited ability for the majority of operators to secure specific insurance that will meet the needs of the waste management and resource recovery industry.
I am pleased to announce that WMAA has negotiated a number of insurance products that have been designed for the waste and resource recovery sector. These insurance products cover waste transportation, general product liability, landfill pollution, premises pollution, contractor pollution and professional indemnity. All products will be underwritten by Liberty International Underwriters and provided by Arthur J. Gallagher exclusively to WMAA members.
These products not only meet an important industry need, but we are seeing moves in Victoria and other EPAs around the country to give consideration to the use of these insurance products as forms of FA.
Please contact the WMMA office if you would like more information about this exclusive offer.

Australia might still lag behind its international counterparts, but with recent news of developments in Western Australia, EfW is progressively gaining traction nationally, with the waste and resource recovery industry feeling a surge in a new direction of how waste is perceived and treated in Australia.
The Waste Management Association of Australia( WMAA) has a long history of taking the lead in engaging the industry, experts and government in developing EfW in this country.
Following on from the success of WMAA’ s 2014 EfW symposium, the association is hosting The Energy from Waste 2016 Conference – Waste today, energy tomorrow, to be held 25-27 October 2016 in Sydney.
The conference will explore the full life cycle potential of energy from waste in Australia from project creation, technologies, regulatory settings, stakeholder engagement, bankability, funding, integration with other infrastructure, procurement, design, construction, operation, maintenance and aftercare.
Keynote presentations will include experts who are instrumental in developing, delivering and operating energy from waste plants overseas including:
Kevin Whiting Senior Technical Director, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff
Kevin has over 30 years’ experience in the field of thermal engineering and waste management treatment technologies. He is recognised worldwide as an expert in combustion, gasification and pyrolysis of various waste streams and has significant experience with other waste treatment techniques such as anaerobic digestion and MBT, including SRF production and utilisation. These activities have encompassed many industry sectors including oil, gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, renewable energy and waste management.
Kevin has worked as a technical consultant for more than 15 years, including as Technical Director of Juniper Consultancy Services Ltd where he was the technical expert of the team that developed a worldwide reputation for techno-business evaluations for the waste industry.
Ruedi Kummer Managing Director, Renergia Zentralschweiz AG
Ruedi Kummer is a mechanical engineer with 25 years’ experience in Energy from Waste. In 2010, Ruedi became Project Manager of the 220,000 tpy Renergia EfW plant which was commissioned in 2015.
Today, Ruedi is the Managing Director of the Renergia plant situated next to Lucerne, Switzerland.
