BUSINESS PROFILE:
Boom Boom the Label
Victorious in the‘ Small Business of the Year’ category at the 2016 Sussex Business Awards, Boom Boom the Label was founded in 2012 by Alie Mackintosh and began as a hobby that she discovered a passion for by designing and making clothing for herself. By the time Alie graduated from Central Saint Martins university, the business was ready to take on full time and since then has grown to gain global recognition for the quality and style of the clothing, which is designed and made in their Lewes studio.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT BOOM BOOM THE LABEL?
I founded Boom Boom the Label in 2012; what began as a hobby is now a fashion company that designs, manufactures and retails a collection of trend-led clothing for women. Our customer base is international, with over 70 per cent of our customers located outside of the UK, and our product offering currently consists of 177 products, specialising in party wear, with a large focus on dresses. We have developed a special technique to double layer the fabric during the production of our clothing, which provides a body supportive and flattering fit, with properties similar to shape wear.
HOW LONG HAS IT TAKEN TO DEVELOP YOUR BRAND?
Boom Boom the Label has developed over the past five years to get to where it is now and is continuingly developing. The product strategy is simple: to make high quality, affordable products that maintain our customer loyalty. Through striving for the best fit, feel and style for our clothing, we aim to enhance the connection our customers feel with our brand, and we are passionate about designing and making products that we are proud of.
ARE ALL OF YOUR CLOTHES MANUFACTURED LOCALLY? WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?
We are proud to say that our clothing is handmade in England by a talented team of seamstresses in our Lewes-based headquarters. In a time where fast fashion and unethical production is at the forefront of customers’ minds, our ethical practice and UK-based production adds to the strength of the brand. Plus, we know that by manufacturing the products in-house, we can control the quality and fit of our garments, identifying directly any potential issues that we need to work on to improve the garment before it reaches the customer. Our low returns rate and volume of repeat customer purchases reflect the success of working this way.
WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR SIGNATURE STAPLE PIECE?
Our best-selling item changes weekly, however, our signature piece is probably our Savannah Maxi Skirt, which has been worn by Kim Kardashian and uses our signature double-layered fabric( pictured top right).
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR BOOM BOOM THE LABEL?
We strive to have a Boom Boom the Label garment as the staple item in every woman’ s wardrobe. The special piece that you go back to time and time again for the quality, fit and how it makes you feel. We are hosting a pop up shop in Brighton until 2nd April at 114 Church Street, BN1 1UD, which will be the first time we have had a physical store and we are very excited to get feedback on this. We hope this could lead to another popup shop or even a permanent store in the future – so watch this space!
