Ways of Seeing
// until 5 Jul
Vivien Leigh: Public Faces,
Private Lives // until 4 Sep
Exhibiting together
for the first time,
five artists with very
distinctive styles and a
shared love of colour,
texture, and a touch
of the surreal launch
a rich and exciting
collection. Ranging
from explorations of
local history to glimpses
of mysterious other worlds, the collection includes Carol Lawson’s
evocative paintings of the ever-changing patterns and colours across
the South Downs; Nichola Campbell’s vibrant collages inspired by the
lives and work of William Nicholson, Enid Bagnold, Edward BurneJones and Rudyard Kipling; Barbara Todd’s atmospheric paintings
and intriguing themed boxes such as Two Birds from Ancient
Egypt, gleaming with the treasure of found gems; Chris McEwan’s
idiosyncratic work, which finds historical and spiritual inspiration from
gardens and downland of Sussex; and Elizabeth Lamont’s shimmering
oriental landscapes and narratives captured in layers of stained glass.
This delightful exhibition
explores the life of one of our
most glamorous actresses,
Vivien Leigh. Set in the former
family home of Oliver Messel,
her favourite costume and
set designer, you’ll discover
exhibits from Leigh’s personal
archive on loan from the
Victoria and Albert Museum,
London. From costumes and
sketches, to photographs and

scripts, you’ll see objects that
in Caesar and Cleopatra, 1945, Victoria and
Albert Museum, London
reveal more about the private
world of this glamorous figure.
Love letters from her husband Laurence Olivier, Leigh’s own diaries,
and 3D stereoscopic slides offer a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse into
the life of Britain’s first international film star. The exhibition has been
organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Entrance by
timed ticket only.
