BRIGHTON
THE BREAKFAST CLUB, 16-17 MARKET ST
EASTBOURNE
FARM FRIDAY ST, 15 FRIDAY ST, LANGNEY
Already established in London, in June last year the oh-so trendy
Breakfast Club decided to spread its wings and get friendly with
Brighton’s eclectic locals. Bringing the design kudos for which it’s known
in the capital to the coast, the Brighton restaurant is a sort of Miami
Vice meets 70’s art deco diner and the music is on the right side of cool
without being too ‘hipster’.
A big white pub set in spacious grounds on Langney’s Friday Street,
Farm Friday St is a Sunday morning pub just as Sunday morning pubs
should be – laid back with plenty of large tables on which to lounge
leisurely with the papers. The staff are attentive enough, but won’t rush
you along, and the breakfast menu is helpfully divided into only three
options, so you’ll need minimal effort to make a decision where that’s
concerned too. Served from 9am until 11am at weekends, you can
choose The American, which is pancakes slathered in maple syrup and
served with salty streaky bacon; The Full English, a big plate of sausage,
bacon, eggs, mushrooms, plum tomatoes and black pudding served with
toast and strong coffee (apparently ‘guaranteed to cure your hangover’);
or, The Posh One, a more refined combination of scrambled egg and
smoked salmon served on an English muffin.
Served from 8am until 5pm, there really is a breakfast for everyone here.
If you want a classic fry up, go for The Full Monty, which features all
the usual suspects – bacon, sausage, eggs, mushrooms and beans –
but throws in black pudding, fried potatoes and doorstep toast too; if
you want eggs, you can have them poached or scrambled, Benedict,
Florentine, or Royale; but if you really want the full Breakfast Club
experience, opt for the All American pancakes: a huge stack served
with streaky bacon, lashings of maple syrup, eggs, sausage and fried
potatoes. Your cholesterol won’t thank you, but your taste buds will sing.

LAPORTE’S, 4 LANSDOWN PL
With wonderful side streets to explore and shopping aplenty, atmospheric
Lewes isn’t short on places to grab breakfast, but Laporte’s – a family-run
establishment that combines its mother and daughter owners’ passions
for food, art and antiques – pips the others to the first place post.
Using local farmers’ market produce and organic and fair trade items
wherever possible, their buttery French toast with maple syrup and warm
blueberries is the stuff of local legend and their coffee – strong, dark and
made from Arabica beans – deserves a mention too.
BRIGHTON
SILO, 39 UPPER GARDNER ST
GREAT FOR KIDS
Really hot on natural produce and the UK’s first zero waste restaurant,
Silo was one of Brighton’s most lauded 2014 openings and has upped
its credentials once more with the addition of a kids’ breakfast menu that
doesn’t patronise or pander. You can grab a timeless favourite in the form
of rye sourdough or spelt toast with butter and quince jam, or enhance
their tiny taste buds with a porridge of activated grains, almond milk and
quince jam.
The more health-conscious among you will love the yoghurt with honey
and toasted almonds, or organic muesli served with milk. The breakfast
croissant is lifted several levels by the addition of local bacon, egg and
field mushrooms; or you can opt for a full cooked breakfast mixing and
matching your favourites from a list of quality ingredients.

CAFÉ 17, 17 BEXHILL RD, ST LEONARDS
Small, very clean and award winning no less, having scooped an
accolade for serving up the Best Builders’ Breakfast in Britain, Café 17 is
testament to the fact that sometimes a good breakfast doesn’t need to
be anything fancy and is all about ingredients you would expect on your
plate, just cooked really well. Frank, Maria and family have run Café 17 for
years and cook each breakfast fresh every morning with local ingredients
sourced from nearby butchers, bakers and farmers. We defy you to
find a more perfect fried egg – incredible when dip
