NEWS BRIGHTON AND HOVE CITY READS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF SHARED READING Celebrating ten years of shared reading, City Reads (Brighton and Hove) is the longest running big read in the UK. The chosen book for 2015 is Matt Haig’s The Humans, an accessible, funny and inventive book that asks what it means to be human. People have already started the book and the celebration of reading culminates in events around Brighton and Hove from 10th October – 1st November. City Reads is an annual citywide reading festival which aims to spread a love of books and ideas to the widest possible audience throughout Brighton & Hove run by Collected Works CIC. The concept is simple: selecting one book by one author for the whole community to read, discuss, debate and creatively engage with in a series of special events, workshops and performances. Sarah Hutchings, artistic director explains how proud she is that City Reads has such a special book to celebrate its 10th birthday: “This book changes lives. Just go on Twitter and search ‘Matt Haig The Humans’ to see what I mean. As soon as I read the book, I knew we’d found our 2015 title. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it was a book I wanted to share with family, friends and acquaintances, so choosing it for Brighton & Hove’s annual big read seemed like the perfect way to do that.” The full programme of events will be revealed in September – but already announced is the big closing event featuring Matt Haig in conversation with Alex Clark (1st Nov, The Old Market). www.cityreads.co.uk BRIGHTON i360 TOWER NOW TALLEST BUILDING IN SUSSEX The Brighton i360 tower is now officially the tallest building in Sussex, having reached 120 metres high, despite the fact the construction is not yet complete. and we expect to complete the 162 metre high tower by the middle of September, if not sooner if the weather is good.” David Marks, architect of the i360, explained: “Building the i360 is a formidable engineering operation. The jacking tower is a vertical factory, a vertical production line. Individual steel cans go in at the bottom, and the finished tower comes out of the top, with the steel cans safely bolted together and clad in an aluminium veil.” The i360’s chief executive Eleanor Harris announced the milestone in August. She said: “The i360 is now the tallest structure in Sussex: taller than Shoreham Power Station, which previously was the tallest structure, and Sussex Heights in Brighton & Hove, which was the tallest building, and other famous landmarks such as Chichester Cathedral and the Gatwick Air Traffic Control tower. Segments of the glass pod, which has been designed and built by leading cable car designers POMA, will arrive in Brighton in the autumn and then work will begin on the beach buildings, to create a stunning new events and visitor centre and restaurant. "Up close the tower is an incredibly elegant and beautiful piece of architecture, soaring up into the sky and it will be fantastic to see the tower revealed in all its glory when the square jacking tower, used to build the tower, is removed next month. National and international interest in the Brighton i360 is building, with film crews and magazines visiting to find out more from all over the world. The attraction remains on track to open next summer. “We are on schedule and have less than 50 metres of tower to build, 11
