INSIDER SUMMER 2019 | Page 3

Insider Media Is Netflix on Disney’s hit list? With the Disney streaming service nearing closer to its release, what will happen to its properties on other services and what of the services themselves? By Oliver Bessell The days where Net- flix ruled the stream- ing service arena could be soon put to rest as Disney’s new service threatens to add pretty heavy competition. While it will also affect other services like Amazon Prime or Hulu, it will seemingly have the biggest effect on Net- flix, Which currently takes top place in terms of quality con- tent and sales. As the Disney service isn’t going to hit the U.K quite as soon as the U.S we’ll measure its monthly subscrip- tion fee in dollars. The standard pack- age price of Netflix is around $12, while Disney’s is said to be almost half at $6.99, this in itself may buy over a lot of potential customers. But it not only threat- ens the sales of Net- flix it also affects its content. As Disney will remove all Disney owned properties from Netflix, which includes Marvel prop- erties or Pixar films. But the seeds of Mar- vels removal from Net- flix have already been sown as Netflix has can- celled all Marvel-Netflix shows due to the dam- aged relationship be- tween Marvel and Net- flix because of the fact that new Marvel shows will be created and overseen by the Disney streaming service going forward. However, other shows on Hulu like Run- aways, or on ABC, the longest running Marvel show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, are seem- ingly safe for now. The infamous Netflix logo. “I’m pretty op- timistic” says Robert Iger, Disney Chairman. This means that some fan favourite Marvel shows like Daredevil or Jessica Jones and others are cancelled. And with the deal made with Netflix disal- lowing the charac- ters from appearing in other shows for at least 2 years af- ter cancellation, this lowers the chances of the titular char- acters being seen again for some time. While I doubt Net- flix will begin to fail altogether (they still have over 139 mil- lion subscribers) I do think that the competition will cause a re-think about how they will combat Disney. However Disney has left a large area for Netflix to continue filling up, as they are seemingly only focusing on produc- ing family orientat- ed shows (for now). So this will allow Netflix to continue shows like Black Mirror. The College magazine online: sixthformmag.blogspot.co.uk
