Layered Security : Steps to Feel Safe and Secure at Home
AS HIGHLIGHTED BY BROOK SECURITY MD TERRY ROFFEY ’ S INTERVIEW ON BBC NEWS , FOLLOWING THE HIGH PROFILE BURGLARY AT RAHEEM STERLING ’ S HOME DURING THE WORLD CUP CAMPAIGN , THERE IS MUCH THAT CAN BE LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCES OF CELEBRITIES WHEN IT COMES TO SECURING OUR OWN HOMES .
Here Terry explains more …
Did you see my interview on BBC News following the break in to Raheem Sterling ’ s home ?
I was talking about footballers and celebrities being targets for criminals due to them living their life in the public eye . We know where they are going to be at different times and for how long they will be there .
Well , while we are not all footballers or celebrities , we can learn from their experiences when their homes and families have been targeted because of their visibility and predictability .
Not many of us will be featured in glossy magazines or Through The Keyhole type programmes , but , increasingly , there is a lot we can give away unintentionally on social media . From shouting about it ‘ look at my new car ’ post to celebratory ‘ we ’ ve moved ’ i . e . here ’ s my new house … to less obvious to you , but very clear to criminals , new watch , new jewellery , or oh here ’ s me on my latest city breaks or holiday photos , many are unwittingly drawing attention of the wrong kind .
People who live in nice homes , drive nice cars and have nice things will attract attention . Some of the public will be inspired to want to achieve that level of success and , unfortunately , others may see you as a ‘ target ’ thinking about how they can steal the things you have .
At Brook Security , we have had a client followed home from a shopping trip . Wearing nice clothes and expensive jewellery , and driving a nice car , when returning home to half a million pounds worth of vehicles on the drive , the police , who were fortunately already following the criminal gang , became aware of our client as the gang ’ s new target .
On BBC News I talked about ‘ Layered Security ’, relating the steps you take to protect yourself and your valuables to the layers of clothing we wear - the more you wear , the warmer you are and you can also change the amount you are wearing for comfort . Security is the same . So starting with fences , gates , hedges , lighting ( as supplied by other local companies ) will form part of the layers to help keep you safer .
Electronic security , comprising external detection systems , CCTV video surveillance , intruder alarms , and hold up ( panic ) alarms , are the layers Brook Security can provide . Assisted by remote monitoring with a guarding ( key holder ) response , as well as police response as required .
Physical security of locks and bolts , safe ( panic ) rooms , fogging technology - to fill areas with harmless smoke ( fog ), security shutters and grilles , are all obstacles that can be put between you and any potential intruder ; creating appropriate time delays to allow for police and guarding response to get to you .
These principles can be used in all situations . It is the scale and depth of that will vary depending on the premises and risk of burglary or robbery for the homeowner .
Businesses can also be viewed in much the same way . High end businesses , such as jewellers , car dealerships etc ., will have the same considerations ; keeping their staff and stock safe and secure .
