IN CELEBRATION OF WORLD BOOK DAY, DISCOVER
insideKENT’s
FAVOURITE BOOKS
READING IS, PERHAPS, THE SIMPLEST OF ALL SIMPLE
PLEASURES. WITH JUST A BOOK AND YOUR IMAGINATION
YOU CAN GO ON THE WILDEST OF ADVENTURES, YOU
CAN MEET THE MOST FASCINATING OF PEOPLE, YOU
CAN WITNESS PLANETS BURNING AND WORLDS BEING
CREATED. YOU CAN FALL IN LOVE, YOU CAN DESPISE
DEEPLY, YOU CAN FIGHT, AND LIVE, AND DREAM; AND
YOU CAN DO IT ALL FROM A COMFORTABLE CHAIR, A
BED, A PARK BENCH, ON THE BEACH…
And all of this magic and mayhem that comes from the unique
and really rather extraordinary act of reading (it is, after all,
just letters arranged in order on a page – the rest is all in your
mind), is all too easy to set to one side when there are other
things to do.
Luckily, World Book Day changes all that. Designated by
UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading,
World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries across
the world each year.
In celebration of World Book Day 2020 on Thursday 5th
March, the team at insideKENT were tasked with the mammoth
task of considering what their favourite book might be or, if
that was too tricky a decision, what they had recently read
that they would like to recommend.

My favourite book is…
I can't choose a favourite, I have too many! But the book
I last read (aside from Postman Bear for 60millionth time!)
and loved was This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay.
What is it about?
It's the hilarious and painfully honest account of comedian
and former junior doctor Adam Kay's time at the front
line of the NHS. Recounting the endless hours, missed
days with family and friends, the shocking waste of NHS
time by ‘patients’ and some classically hilarious anecdotes;
all taken from Kay's private diaries kept during his
relentless 97-hour weeks from his time as house officer
to registrar.
Why do you love it?
Having experienced the best and worst of our NHS,
witnessed family training to go into the profession, and
barely having time to read my own name let alone a
novel at times, this affair of short diary entries allowed
me the chance to dip in as I pleased, although I actually
finished it in a day and a half! It's also my type of humour!

My favourite book is...
Losing My Virginity by Richard Branson.
What is it about?
In Losing my Virginity, you'll discover how Sir
Richard is committed to building a better world
through responsible, holistic business practices and
ventures. You'll also learn about how his company
is reaching for the stars in a new era of commercial
space travel with Virgin Galactic.
Why do you love it?
This book really struck me. From selling vinyl
from his bedroom to the heights of chartering his
first commercial flight and now launching Virgin
Galactic, it’s not just the story of Sir Richard Branson;
it’s a motivational business guide and an inspiring
story for me.
My favourite book is…
Behind Closed Doors
by B. A. Paris.
What is it about?
Jack and Grace seem like the perfect couple
to everyone, they appear to have it all, or do
they? The book follows Jack and Grace and
what really goes on behind closed doors.
Why did you love it?
I like it because this book is a chilling thriller
that I found hard to put down, in fact I found
myself grabbing ever spare second I had to
catch up on the exciting twists and turns.
There were so many 'oh my goodness'
moments! It’s a great, well written book that
was packed with drama and had me gripped
to the end.
