WEDDINGS Capturing Those MAGICAL MOMENTS YOUR GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER BY ASHLEIGH BRITTEN PHOTOGRAPHY Choosing the photographer for you Try, if you can by starting early. Wedding photographers get booked up quite quickly, sometimes years in advance, so it’s very unlikely that you will find someone you really like with availability at the last minute – unless there is a cancellation of course. How to start searching for your wedding photographer Firstly, get online!! Search through Google, digital magazines, Pinterest and scroll through Instagram – start familiarising yourself with the different styles of wedding photography out there and more importantly the styles that take your fancy. Invest in a good photographer What is a good photographer? Someone who has experience, someone who you can trust to get it right? Yes, of course all of those things are important and should certainly be taken into consideration, but what it really boils down to is personal preference. Finding a wedding photographer that resonates with you is so important. Ask yourself whether 60 you want candid, traditional, creative, or contemporary? Begin to narrow it down, create a shortlist of favourites and research, research, research! When you are happy with your list, reach out to the photographer and ask about availability, ask for examples of previous work and client testimonials. All of these factors should help towards making a final decision. What to look out for in 2020 THE RELAXED APPROACH It seems to be becoming more and more popular as the years pass, but this year it will be bigger than ever – the days of formal wedding shots are long gone with couples becoming a lot more cost aware. STYLE Documentary, or ‘reportage’ photography is also on the up and fits in very nicely with the ‘relaxed approach’. With traditional wedding photography being a thing of the past, stiff, posed family photos have been replaced by natural, candid shots – people just enjoying the day. This style of photography is informal – the real art of storytelling. THE BEFORE AND AFTER Engagement shoots have been a thing for some time now and often come included within a photographer’s package, but now, it’s starting much earlier with groom’s hiring photographers to capture the ‘big question’ moment – a lovely way of reliving a moment for years to come. Another trend that is becoming exceedingly more popular is, the day-after photos. Wedding days can often be extremely chaotic and sometimes stressful. The day-after photo shoot allows for a shoot at another location with additional time for more shots! Wedding photography is becoming so much more diverse and it’s only going to continue to get more exciting as the years go on – dramatic locations, smoke bombs, drones and selfie sticks – whatever next!
