MAKE YOUR HOME ENERGY EFFICIENT IN 2020 CONT.
But not all green technologies require big changes
or high upfront costs. In fact, just by making a
few simple changes, you can help save the planet
and cut your energy bills too - a win-win situation
all round.
Changes such as ensuring your boiler is serviced
regularly and upgraded to the latest version. With
heating and hot water accounting for 62% of your
annual energy bill, your boiler and heating controls
can have a big impact. It is why investing in a smart
thermostat, which puts you in control, is also a
wise decision. Allowing you to control the heating
of your home from wherever you are, ensuring that
it is only heated when needed.
Many of us now opt for showers over baths to
conserve water, but if you have a power shower this
could be a false economy and actually doing more
128
harm than good. Installing a water-saving
showerhead that is aerated or low-flow, will
significantly reduce your water consumption.
The same can be said for the taps around your home.
Simply by applying an aerator tap head to your
existing tap, you can instantly save water without
noticing any difference in water pressure. The
aerators work by mixing water with air to deliver
the same water pressure but with less water.
Ensuring you have the most energy efficient electrical
appliances in your home will make a big difference.
All products are now labelled with their energy
ratings, so ensure you choose A++, A+ or A rated
where possible for your dishwasher, washing machine,
tumble dryer, fridge, and freezer. There are even
eco-kettles available for tea and coffee lovers, which
will stop you continuing boiling enough water for
five cups when you only need one!
Lastly, one of the easiest changes to make is to your
energy supplier. Choosing a green energy supplier
can make a big difference, and with many to choose
from including Bulb, Green Energy UK, Ecotricity,
and OVO, to name a few, this simple switch can
make a real difference to the planet and your pocket!
Whilst we should all protect and care for our
world, as George Clarke, presenter of Channel 4’s
The Home Show and The Restoration Man said, "People
aren't going to change their habits just to save the
environment, they need to see the benefits for
themselves.” So whatever you choose to do to make
your home more energy efficient this year, whether
big or small, you can be safe in the knowledge that
not only will it be of benefit to the planet, it will also
be of benefit to your wallet and your sense of well
being too.
