SPOTLIGHT ON CANTERBURY CONT.
West Station, is a must-visit location, as is
The Cheese Shop on Palace Street. Christmas Window Competition -
From 1 December the names of the 5 Canterbury businesses you have
spotted golden eggs in at www.canterbury.co.uk
Jewellery: The city has a terrific group of artisan
designer/makers: Ortwin Thyssen (Palace Street),
Justin Richardson (Sun Street), Luke Goldsmith
(St Peters Street), Yi Lin (Sun Street), and Trevor
Fitzgerald (Burgate), are all continuing the ancient
jewellers’ craft in the city. In 2018, Canterbury Pottery (Buttermarket),
Whirligig Toy Store (Sun Street) and Fenwick
(Whitefriars) were voted the winners of the
Christmas Window Competition, but who will
be awarded gold this year, and who will receive the
coveted Lord Mayor’s Choice Award? Perhaps you
would prefer to choose for yourself… tour the city
and pick your favourite - but make sure to go in and
show your appreciation - they have worked hard to
create these masterpieces. 1 lucky winner and 10 runners-up will be selected
and announced on 16 December - all receiving
festive treats from Canterbury’s local businesses just
in time for Christmas.
Pottery and Glass: Canterbury Pottery (The
Buttermarket), Glass Art, Cosmo China, and
Espression Arts (Palace Street), are all making
unique pieces right in the city!
Art and Craft: Local makers have a number of
outlets in the city: try the Christmas Market and
Walrus and Oyster (Burgate); whilst local artists
sell through Lilford Gallery, Stark Gallery and
Sowley; and don’t miss the craft fairs & markets in
the Westgate Hall.

Festive Ice Rink
2019 will see the launch of Canterbury’s very own
ice rink! Canterbury City Council has taken on the
responsibility of bringing this fantastic dream to
fruition, providing the perfect addition for the city
at Christmas. Launching on Friday 29th November,
and running until Weds 1st Jan 2020, the rink will
be situated in the Dane John Gardens, providing a
pretty backdrop for visiting skaters. There’ll be music,
festive food and drink outlets, and twinkling lights
to ensure that the experience can last into the evening.
