CANTERBURY’S NEWEST THEATRE
The Malthouse Theatre
FOLLOWING AN OUTSTANDING CONVERSION OF ITS STUNNING VICTORIAN ABODE, THE
MALTHOUSE THEATRE TAKES CENTRE STAGE AS THE KING’S SCHOOL, CANTERBURY’S
NEW CENTRE OF DRAMA AND MUST VISIT ENTERTAINMENT AND ARTS SPACE.
The Malthouse Theatre’s intensely atmospheric
Victorian building, with its oak-sleeper grand
staircase, offers a 334-seat theatre, drama and dance
studios, and a professional kitchen, right in the heart
of Canterbury, easily accessible from the city centre
and train stations.
As well as standing proud as the King’s School,
Canterbury’s centre of drama, the Malthouse also
opens its doors to professional touring productions
and community projects. Productions such as Hobson’s
Choice with John D. Collins, best known for TV’s
‘Allo! ‘Allo!, and the critically acclaimed Pantaloons’
production of Othello are already booked in for the
autumn season.
And with four shows coming this festive season to
choose from, audiences are guaranteed to enjoy a
night out at Canterbury’s newest theatre.
The King’s School, will be presenting the theatre’s
first musical, A Little Shop of Horrors from the 5th to
the 8th December. Set in an early year of a decade,
not too long before our own, Seymour Krelborn
discovers a strange and interesting plant during a
total eclipse of the sun. But you never know what
can happen on Skid Row when a hungry plant needs
feeding…Follow the journey of Seymour’s love for
Audrey (and Audrey II) and find out if good can
ever triumph over evil in this eccentric homage to
‘B’ movies. With catchy songs, outlandish events
and a whole lot of green, you won’t want to miss the
first King’s School musical in many years!
Pam Ferris is hosting an evening on the 15th
December. Best known for her roles in Matilda,
Darling Buds Of May, Harry Potter, Rosemary And
Thyme and many more, Pam will be recounting tales
of her amazing career. With special guests The
Canterbury Voices Choir providing festive
entertainment, the evening will be full of fun, laughter
and an auction of promises. All profits go to The
Fifth Trust to help their amazing work supporting
adults with learning difficulties.
Michael Law, founder of the world-famous Piccadilly
Dance Orchestra, returns to Canterbury on the
18th December to perform A Christmas Cabaret. The
complete festive package with will be accompanied
by a Christmas banquet prepared by the superb
in-house chefs. You will receive a welcome drink
on arrival, enjoy a performance from Michael Law
and then be able to feast on butternut squash
soup with a saffron cream or hot smoked salmon
plate; followed by a traditional Christmas dinner
of turkey and all the trimmings or vegan nut roast
with all the trimmings; and to finish tea or coffee
and a mince pie.
Finally, no Christmas season in a Victorian Malthouse
would be complete without A Christmas Carol!
Performed by a multi-talented cast in The Pantaloons’
own inimitable, hilarious and moving style on the
20th and 21st December, this really will be an evening
out to remember; featuring live music,
audience interaction and absolutely no humbug*.
*There may be some humbug.
