FOOD+DRINK CHRISTMAS’ CROWNING GLORY KENT MIGHT BE WELL KNOWN FOR ITS HOPS AND ORCHARDS, BUT THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE THAT WE DO EXCEPTIONALLY WELL HERE WHEN IT COMES TO NATURAL PRODUCE – WE ‘GROW’ SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE TURKEYS! ACROSS OUR LUSH FARMLAND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FANTASTIC FARMERS AND PRODUCERS WHO SPECIALISE IN THESE BIG BIRDS, GETTING THEM READY FOR THE CHRISTMAS MEAL WE ALL SO LOOK FORWARD TO. KENT TURKEYS With welfare in mind, each of these suppliers understands just what it takes to raise the ideal turkey. Kent Turkeys // Biddenden www.kentturkeys.co.uk Kent Turkeys produce free range Bronze turkeys & Norfolk geese on the family farm, Woolpack Corner Farm, just outside Biddenden. By allowing the birds to free range across 16 acres of pasture, they are able to graze and pick at the bugs and berries, meaning they are naturally happy & healthy. Overnight the birds are tucked away safely in clean straw tunnels where they have clean water and plenty of food available to keep them warm & safe through the night. The birds are hatched in their natural season and grow slowly to full maturity which, coupled with being free range, means they develop a natural layer of fat, as well as a more mature carcass & bone – all of which are essential for award-winning flavour and a delicious natural gravy stock. Every turkey comes with full cooking instructions and complimentary thermometer, making cooking Christmas dinner straight forward & stress free! 110 Kent Turkey’s KellyBronze turkeys & Norfolk geese are available to order online from early October at www.kentturkeys.co.uk or by calling 01580 291792 for collection from the farm or selected pick up points around Kent. Appledore Turkeys // Appledore www.appledoreturkeys.co.uk Sam’s Turkeys // Faversham www.samsturkeys.co.uk Appledore Turkeys owners, Clive and Andrew Wreathall, are passionate about what they do. Members of the Traditional FarmFresh Turkey Association, they produce turkeys that are well cared for and free range. The turkeys are fed on a natural diet of wheat and vegetables, and there is not an additive, growth promoter, or drug in sight. Sam is a 22 year-old young farmer who is passionate both about animals and about good food - a winning combination for his business, Sam’s Turkeys, based in Hernhill just outside Faversham. Sam buys five-week-old bronze turkey poults in June to raise to maturity for Christmas. They are free- range and slow-grown, with a longer life than the average supermarket bird, allowing tenderness and flavour to develop. “Welfare of the birds is key,” is Sam’s motto. They are given freedom to roam over four acres and, as well as being fed a traditional natural turkey mix, they are happy to be given waste apples, plums and strawberries from the farm, and enjoy the opportunity to forage the ground for other food. Appledore Turkeys was started in 1940 and has been a family concern ever since. Today, the farm consists of over 1200 hectares across the Romney Marsh. Molash Turkeys // Challock www.molashturkeys.co.uk The key to the turkeys from Molash being so perfect for Christmas, (and any other occasion you might want them for), is the organic nature of the farm itself. The birds are able to range freely, displaying their natural behaviour and are therefore content and happy. The grass they eat contains no artificial fertiliser or pesticides, and is full of herbs and goodness.
