FRENCH FLAIR AND INCOMPARABLE VIEWS AT
MR WHITE’S
ENGLISH CHOPHOUSE
IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE insideKENT TEAM TO UP STICKS AND SHIP OUT OF THE
OFFICE WHEN THERE IS THE PROMISE OF LUNCH ON OFFER, BUT WHEN THE NEWS CAME THAT WE WOULD BE
DINING AT THE NEWLY OPENED OFFERING FROM MARCO PIERRE WHITE’S STABLE, MR. WHITE’S ENGLISH
CHOPHOUSE AT THE DOVER MARINA HOTEL, THERE WAS A VERITABLE STAMPEDE. COMBINING CLASSIC BRITISH
DISHES WITH A DASH OF FRENCH FLAIR AND PANORAMIC VIEWS ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL, MR WHITE’S
ENGLISH CHOPHOUSE AT THE DOVER WATERFRONT IS PROVING TO BE A ‘CUT’ ABOVE THE REST. BY SAMANTHA READY
Having only opened its purposely refurbished doors
a matter of weeks prior to our visit, we were all
impressed by the contemporary yet classic dining
room that has taken full advantage of its seafront
position and near floor-to-ceiling windows that not
only flood the bright airy dining room with natural
light but afford great views across the English Channel
and towards the legendary White Cliffs.
A combination of dark wood tables and chairs for
couples or groups of four, and larger upholstered
banquette benches in rich hues of mustard and
brown – perfect for larger parties and groups such
as ourselves – with quirky industrial light fittings and
carefully selected artwork completing the look, the
restaurant has a refined but welcoming feel.
And then of course there is the food. The menu is
a lovingly curated combination of classic British
dishes with a contemporary French twist with inviting
starters including options such as classic pea soup
with chunks of ham, crispy scotch eggs with the
perfect runny yolk and a heaving plate of crispy
calamari with fresh tartare.
Mains including classics such as fish and chips,
coronation chicken curry and chicken and leek pie
are dominated, of course, by 35-day-aged grass fed
beef and delicious freshly ground beef burgers.
We chose the filet from the host of cuts which include
centre cut sirloins, rib eyes or a huge rib of beef on
the bone sharer and come with triple-cooked chips,
and are also customisable with a host of inspired
toppings. Breakfast grill? Fried double-yolk eggs?
Prawns? Flavoured butters? The choice is yours. As
for the burgers, you can choose to go Keith Floyd
Bristol for its cheese and bacon, opt for The Alex
James for its melted Blue Monday (a blue cow milk
cheese) or decide like we did to sample The John
Lennon – a huge brioche bun with melted cheddar,
crispy onion rings and Colonel Mustard’s
mayonnaise; inspired!
With barely any room left, but totally hooked by
the allure of the dessert menu, we plumped
for millionaire’s shortbread, which had a
lovely smoothness similar to cheesecake, and the
team favourite of the day, Mr White’s sticky toffee
pudding with glace de Paris ice cream and hot
butterscotch sauce.
With a fresh welcoming dining room, attentive staff,
an extensive drinks list including a range of refreshing
cocktails, classic dishes and, of course, those views,
Mr White’s English Chophouse is a standout cut
above the rest.
