GALLERY SEVENTEEN
AND SUE CLARK CERAMICS
GALLERY SEVENTEEN AND SUE CLARK CERAMICS ARE SITUATED IN BECKENHAM, NEAR TO
BECKENHAM JUNCTION, AND HAVE BEEN THERE FOR 20 YEARS WITH THE SITE PLAYING HOST
TO A GALLERY SINCE 1906. ESTABLISHED BY JOHN AND SUE CLARK, OVER THE YEARS THEY
HAVE EVOLVED FROM A PURELY CERAMICS GALLERY TO A FINE ART GALLERY, AS WELL AS A
TEACHING STUDIO AND A BESPOKE PICTURE FRAMER.
Framing
With a comprehensive variety of framing
options, they frame everything from the simplest
photograph to the most complex piece of antique
silk, embroidery, artefacts and memorabilia. At
Gallery Seventeen, they offer a complete in-house
framing service, providing high-quality frames and
framing advice. With a vast selection of mouldings,
mounts and glazing options to choose from, they
can frame your pictures to suit your style, budget
and to the conservation quality of your choice. All
framing is completed on site, so your artwork never
leaves the premises.
One of their specialities is framing memorabilia.
This can be anything from family heirlooms
and objects of sentimental value to medals and
football shirts. Gallery Seventeen take pride in
designing a layout and colour scheme to enhance
the chosen pieces.
Art Gallery
At Gallery Seventeen, they stock a wide variety of
artworks. From well-known artists such as JJ Adams,
Paul Oz and Zombiedan from the pop art genre, to
more traditional forms of art such as etchings by
Louise Davies, John Grigsby and watercolours by
Graham Davies.
This year, they have an exciting programme
of exhibitions coming up, including work from Paul
Oz, Zombiedan, Louise Davies and an exhibition
of ceramic work created by their workshop attendees.
Workshops
Gallery Seventeen run a range of art classes for
mixed abilities. Their classes take place upstairs in
the Teaching Studio where they hold both daytime
and evening classes in ceramics, drawing and
watercolour.
Ceramics classes are led by Sue Clark, an
experienced ceramicist. Sue studied at Camberwell
School of Art and has been a practicing ceramicist
for a number of years. Her work is bold, colourful
and inventive and her classes specialise in hand-
build, slab and coil techniques, giving everyone the
chance to create something interesting and beautiful.
They have five two-hour ceramic classes running
on an eight-week renewable basis, and there is also
the option to do more intensive three- or four-day
weekend courses. These can be a great idea for
complete beginners as it gives them a chance to
really get stuck in and focus on a number of pieces
with exciting results. Courses run approximately
every two months.
Gallery Seventeen also run morning and
afternoon drawing and watercolour workshops on
Mondays (watercolour) and Tuesdays (drawing),
which are suitable for any ability. Classes are small,
with a maximum of eight students per class, allowing
for plenty of tutor time. The classes are very
popular with students often booking onto the next
set of classes and beyond – John and Sue
are understandably proud to be, and look
forward to continuing to be, Beckenham’s premier
centre for art.
