PORT LYMPNE Port Lympne // www.aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne The Ossuary at St Leonard’s Church // www.slhk.org/theossuary Going on safari is something y ou w ould nor mally associa te with the African plains, not the Garden of England, but at Port Lympne you can enjoy a safari without the hefty price tag or ha ving to sit on a plane f or hours and hours. It’s ideal! St Leonard’s Church can be f ound in Hythe. At fir st glance it seems to be a perfectly normal parish church: very pretty, a nice place for contemplation and perhaps a good choice for a wedding too. But underneath – literally – this lovely village church there is something else, something… unusual… Port Lympne is home to 760 different animals and 90 different species, including the only giraffe in Kent. As well as this, there is the spectacular dinosaur forest – the UK’s largest outdoor dinosaur exhibition – plus places to ea t, drink and shop. You can even stay overnight and experience what it’s like to ‘glamp’, or enjoy the gorgeous hotel. It is a collection of 1,022 human skulls. They are kept in four arched bays and are thought to be the lar gest and best preserved collection of human skulls in Britain. And let’s not forget the huge pile of other bones (and some more skulls) that measures 7.5m in length by 1.8-metres wide by 1.8-metres tall. It is unusual and ethereal and sure to be a highlight on a day out if you enjoy history and the somewhat macabre. 39
