WELCOME Another month has come and gone, and it’s May already! Wasn’t it just Christmas? I remember my mum telling me that time seems to go faster the older you get, and yet again, mum was right. She was also right about how your metabolism slows down when you get older, hence the half stone I’ve gained eating Easter chocolate. Unfortunately for me, the gaining probably won’t stop there, because it’s our annual Food Issue, and I just must try everything featured in these pages. Well, ‘must’ is a strong word. Perhaps more like ‘want to’. I’ll start with going on a tour of Kent’s best afternoon teas (p78 ). Who can resist tiers of lovely sandwiches, plates overflowing with perfect little cakes and a steaming pot of tea? Maybe you can resist if you’re keeping your bikini body in mind, but my bikini days are over, so please pass the scones. Once you’ve dabbed the corners of your mouth after your very sophisticated high tea, head off for a unique foodie day out (p71). From cheese tasting to sugarcraft, there are endless opportunities to explore culinary culture in Kent. I especially like the idea of a chocolate and wine pairing class at Kent Wine School in Tunbridge Wells. Restaurant of the Year in the 2019 Taste of Kent Awards, The Small Holding’s head chef, Will Devlin, has shared a wonderfully simple recipe of skate with butter and wild herbs – definitely one to try over a boring old takeaway. In addition to food, food and more food, this issue features the South East’s most exciting festivals (p47), who’d-a-thought- it days out (p39), an extended Getaways section (p128) featuring four very different but very lovely breaks, and an informative feature about fostering (p163) to celebrate National Foster Care Month. Of course you’ll find all of the regular features you’ve come to know and love: events, fashion, interiors, outdoor living and news – something for everyone, even if food’s not your thing. Enjoy the last full month of spring, enjoy the food our wonderful county has to offer, and enjoy this month’s issue. Let us know what you’re up to on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook @insideKENT.
