KENT ARTIST PROFILE:
DAVID AUGUSTIN
DEAL-BASED ARTIST, DAVID AUGUSTIN, FINDS THE
KENT COAST TO BE THE PERFECT SPOT FOR PAINTING;
IT INFLUENCES HIM IN EVERY WAY. THIS MONTH,
insideKENT’S LISAMARIE LAMB SPOKE TO DAVID ABOUT
WHY THIS IS, AND WHAT MAKES PAINTING MURALS
SO EXCITING.
If you had to define your art, how would you
describe what you do?
It’s figurative, with a degree of photo realism. I’m
looking to capture the light, mood, and atmosphere
of a setting. I use acrylics on canvas or wood panel,
oils on occasion but the drying time frustrates me.
How did you become an artist?
Like most artists, it’s been a lifelong compulsion to
create. Art ran in the family, so I learnt by osmosis
and observation as much as study. I was also blessed
with a wonderful art tutor throughout my secondary
years who encouraged me at every turn, so I’m
eternally grateful to Andy Blanchard wherever he
may be. I didn’t enjoy St. Martin’s, I was probably
too old-school, so dropped out and set up a small
art business.
