As my guest and I entered for a Friday lunch, we
were instantly welcomed and shown to our table at
the back of the restaurant. Walking past the busy
tables with a mix of business lunches and groups of
friends, the atmosphere was transformed to what
felt like an evening sitting. The stylish decor with
gold plating and mirrored walls added to the start
of our memorable dining experience.
As we both browsed the menus, our waiter
recommended a cocktail from the attractive list and
soon appeared a Transcendental Medication –
honey-infused gin with a mountain sage liqueur,
thyme and lavender for me; and The Proper Copper
– kaffir lime leaf infused vodka with honey and rose
blossom water. Both unique and highly
recommended to get you in the mood for the cuisine
to come.
On offer for lunchtime is a two-course menu
alongside à la carte choices, and a six-course tasting
menu. With a busy day of shopping ahead we opted
for the two-course menu at a very reasonable £25,
with breads, sides and dessert at additional costs.
My first course – kolhapuri chicken salad, peanuts,
cucumber, tomatoes, avocado with a perfect blend
of 25 different spices – was a firm favourite. Equally
as tasty, my guest’s sweet pickle pork ribs, sun dried
mango, onion seeds made for great openers.
Next up from the mains came a beautifully presented
plate of colour and flavours: seared scallops, rava
prawns, malvani dried shrimp rice. The scallops
were cooked to perfection and the crisp batter around
the prawns made for a unique seafood dish. My
guest’s chicken malai tikka, green chilli cream, sugar
snap peas and summer truffle was devoured before
I could even get my folk across the table, and the
sides of lachha butter naan and ghee roast potato
were the perfect accompaniments to our meals.
Although we originally intended to stick to two
courses, after seeing other guests’ desserts arriving
at their tables, we were intrigued to explore the
options available, and ordered the makhan malai –
a saffron milk dome decorated with rose petals,
jaggery brittle and almonds to add a tasty crunch.
We also tried the doda barfi treacle tart with vanilla
bean ice cream – a British classic with an infused
taste. Now full and not ready to shop, our waiter
came over to offer much-needed coffees before we
checked out of our Indian culinary delight!
