LOOKING FOR A COSY KENTISH BOLTHOLE, STEEPED IN HISTORY, MINUTES
FROM THE COUNTRYSIDE, WITH SEASONAL FOOD, CRAFTED DRINKS AND
EXCELLENT FRIENDLY SERVICE? WE’VE FOUND IT, AND MORE, AT
THE WHITE LION,
TENTERDEN
by Samantha Ready
Located at the top end of the high str eet in the
charming town of Tenterden (edge of the Weald
and just past Ashford), lies the charming White Lion
pub. It is everything a typical English pub should
be: beamed ceilings, roaring open fires, dark wooden
floors, cosy leather seating and rustic-yet-modern
wooden bar stools. What is less typical, and mor e
impressive, is the fact that the White Lion has been
able to r etain its olde-w orlde pub c harm whilst
making the transition into destination dining, aided
98
by the installation of a full pizza oven and Josper
grill, both of which inspire the seasonal gastro-pub-
esque menu on offer. Add to tha t the addition of
14 refurbished, modern bedrooms, and you have
the perfect place f or a mini sta ycation (hurrah to
relaxed dining, no designa ted driv er, full wine
pairings and a hearty breakfast!).
