FOOD+DRINK WELCOME TO The Food Issue KENT IS CALLED THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND, BUT HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY? ALTHOUGH IT IS PARTLY TO DO WITH HOW LUSH AND GREEN OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTY IS, IT IS ALSO ABOUT THE PRODUCE WE CAN GROW HERE. IT’S A SPECTACULAR ARRAY OF DIFFERENT VEGETABLES, FRUIT, MEAT, WINE, BEER AND EVEN SPIRITS. ALL OF IT UTILISES THE GLORIOUS BOUNTY THAT KENT HAS TO OFFER, MAKING US SOME OF THE VERY LUCKIEST PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY – AFTER ALL, WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND, WHAT MORE COULD YOU NEED? Food is one of life’s essentials. We need it to live and to function day to day. But just because we have to have it doesn’t mean it has to be basic or boring – and that’s what Kent’s food producers understand more than anything. The more interesting and exciting food is, the more likely people are to want it and to enjoy it. Kentish food is part sustenance, part art form; you can see the gorgeously vibrant displays of juice, fruit and crispy vegetables at farmers’ markets and independent shops. You can see the butcher’s skill when it comes to mouth-watering meat, everything measured and precise. You can see (and taste) how cleverly the ingredients come together to create sparkling wine that is as good as (perhaps even better than) anything from Champagne and gin that is made in the most beautiful of distilleries. It’s all around us – you don’t need to look too far to discover places where this beautiful food is grown and reared, fermented and brewed. Our hops, apples, cobnuts, and much more have always been well renowned, and now our producers are getting recognition too. So don’t forget; wherever and whatever you eat and drink in this magical county of ours, be sure to appreciate the beauty of it as you value the hard work that’s gone into getting it to you. 73
