FOLKESTONE BOOK FESTIVAL IS BACK WITH ANOTHER TEN-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA! YOU ARE INVITED INTO THE HEART OF FOLKESTONE’ S CREATIVE QUARTER FOR A WEEK OF AUTHOR TALKS, THOUGHT PROVOKING DISCUSSIONS, EXQUISITE MUSIC, ENGAGING FAMILY EVENTS, INSPIRING WORKSHOPS AND LOTS MORE.

It launches on Friday 17th November with the annual Creative Quarter Christmas Lights Switch On. This year’ s festivities will be launched by Tracey Chevalier, author of the internationally best-selling Girl with a Pearl Earring, who will later join Claire Armistead of The Guardian, for a discussion exploring the theme of her latest book New Boy, a re-telling of Othello set in 1970’ s Washington DC.
As well as panel talks and film, the Festival boasts a number of highlights including journalist, author and broadcaster Peter Snow and the granddaughter of David Lloyd George, Ann MacMilan on Saturday 18th November. In Gripping Tales of Courage, Cunning and Compassion they deliver a lively, moving and uniquely intimate account of ordinary men and women who rose to the challenge in World War Two.
This year, Folkestone Book Festival embraces wellbeing and the human spirit in a series of events that explore mental health and mindfulness. On Saturday 18th November comedian, writer and international speaker Francesca Martinez, asks What the **** Is Normal? Don’ t miss this funny, inspiring, personal and universal story!
Psychotherapist and best-selling author Susie Orbach visits with In Therapy on Friday 24th November. Covering everything from behaviour patterns to relationships, Susie will give an honest and insightful account of this often secret process.
Multi-award winning author Juno Dawson tells not only her own story, but the story of everyone who is shaped by society’ s expectations on gender – and what we can do about it. Join her on Saturday 25th November at 1.30pm for The Gender Games: the problem with men and women, from someone who has been both.
Folkestone Book Festival is delighted to welcome back political columnist, journalist and presenter Steve Richards for an essential talk, The Rise of the Outsiders. From Trump to Corbyn, Steve will be exploring why conventional politicians are failing to adapt and asks has mainstream politics lost its way? Join the conversation on Saturday 18th November at 7.30pm.
On Sunday 19th November Folkestone Book Festival is delighted to welcome former UK Business Secretary Vince Cable who will be discussing his first novel Open Arms, a gripping international political drama. He tells how his first-hand knowledge of intrigues and machinations of political power informed his writing!.
Don’ t miss award-winning poet Inua Ellams in a performance littered with poems, stories and anecdotes on Monday 20th November. In An Evening with an Immigrant, Inua tells his story, from fleeing Nigeria as a child to performing solo shows at the National Theatre and drinking wine with the Queen of England!
As well as sharing a love for reading, the festival also celebrates the joys of eating. Catch food writer and author of Egg and Soldiers Damien Trench and comedian Miles Jupp for an enlightening, mouth-watering and humorous interview, chaired by the fantastic Andy Miller. This year the Festival marks the 100-year anniversary of the Russian Revolution. From Chekhov to the Cold War, the final day of Folkestone Book Festival is a must for lovers of classical fiction, history and culture.
Actor and scholar Michael Pennington makes a welcome return with his powerful one-man performance, Chekov in Siberia, bringing to life Chekhov’ s 4,000-mile journey across Russia to conduct a survey of the penal colonies on Sakhalin Island.
