Set at the stunning historical setting of Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England’ s Medieval Festival is a three-day immersive experience held over the August bank holiday. This hugely popular annual event is the largest and most authentic of its kind in the UK. Hosting over 15,000 visitors each year, you’ ll get the chance to step back in time and discover the wonder of the past.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, this unique weekend festival offers a very special blend of history and fun for young and old.
Many of the regular visitors have been returning year after year and now bring their own children to share the experience. With so much to see and do, it’ s easy to see why grandparents, babies and even the pet dog love the festival. If you want to stay all weekend there are plenty of camping options and even an onsite B & B.
As well as the amazing atmosphere, visitors enjoy realistic historical battles, a grand parade, jousting, falconry, archery or a wander through the medieval shopping market and the living history village. There’ s plenty of traditional craftspeople to chat to about their skills and trade and a chance to take part in workshops like blacksmith-forging, woodweaving, calligraphy and chain mailing.
For those who prefer to take it easy, a welcome jug of mead awaits at the Buxom Wench Tavern before relaxing at one of the stages to take in some traditional and modern folk music or theatrical performances. Or discover the hilarious Theatre in the Mud, offering a tongue in cheek look at the messier side of the medieval world.
Kids Kingdom is a world of medieval fun for little ones. Children can take part in workshops too. From Jester school and shield or wand making to magic shows, theatre and drum schools. Wizards, jesters, knights, dragons and princesses await!
England’ s Medieval Festival offers weekend camping within the castle grounds and for those looking for a touch of luxury there’ s a medieval glamping village and even a chance to book a VIP room in the castle. For all
