HEALTH+WELLNESS BELLA VOU Q&A MR AMIR NAKHDJEVANI, HAIR RESTORATION SPECIALIST AT BELLA VOU AND ONE OF THE UK’S PRE- EMINENT HAIR TRANSPLANT EXPERTS, ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HAIR RESTORATION. QUESTION Before After "As a man, one of my greatest concerns as I get older is hair loss. What options do I have when my hair starts thinning?" ANSWER Hair loss can be very difficult to come to terms with and those of us who find ourselves follicularly challenged often struggle with low confidence as a result. It's safe to say you're not alone, as hair loss affects a whopping 6.5 million men in the UK, while as many as 40% of men already have noticeable hair loss by their 35th birthday. The good news is that hair restoration techniques have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and there are now a range of treatments which can help to address thinning hair or even implant new hairs to previously bald areas on the scalp, as well as the face, eyebrows and eyelashes. If you find that you are shedding significant quantities of hair, leaving you with a receding hairline and/or bald patches, then it may be time to consider a hair transplant. Modern hair transplant surgery addresses balding, thinning and receding hair by removing healthy hair follicles from a donor region and grafting them onto the bald or thinning areas, resulting in a completely natural looking, permanent head of hair. There are two common hair transplant techniques, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). FUE involves transplanting individual hairs from one part of the body to another, which survive and grow as it did in the donor area, with a natural appearance. FUT involves surgically removing a strip of tissue from a donor area which is cut into many individual follicular units. At Bella Vou we have perfected minimally invasive hair transplant techniques that minimise trauma and scarring to the donor area. 134 FUT enables larger numbers of follicle units to be transplanted in a single session; during FUE treatments, the greatest number of follicle units transferred is about 2,000 while up to 4,000 follicle units can be transplanted using FUT. Both FUE and FUT hair transplant procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, so the treatment is virtually pain-free. Patients are fully recovered from the procedure within two to three days, but most shouldn’t require time off work while they heal. Typically procedures take between four and eight hours to complete and the final results will be visible after 12-18 months. Hair transplants are charged per hair graft, so the total cost will be determined by the number of hairs you require. Average costs are around £2 per graft; if you have quite advanced hair loss you may require anything from 3,000 to 7,500 hairs, but most clients we see usually require between 2,500 and 4,000 hairs to give them the result they are looking for.
