GETAWAYS
Top picks for Venice
WE’RE NOT GOING TO PREACH TO YOU ABOUT THE TOP SIGHTS TO SEE IN VENICE,
ANY GUIDEBOOK CAN DO THAT! HOWEVER THERE ARE SOME MUST SEES, MUST
DOS AND MUST EATS; HERE OUR TOP PICKS FOR YOUR VENICE STAY…
GONDOLA RIDE
GRAND CANAL
Nothing beats cruising down the Grand Canal! You can actually do this aboard one of the regular
running water ferries which is much cheaper than private taxis or gondolas. Not only do you
get to meander down the waterway, you can also hop on and off at different sites that you may
have missed if walking – we recommend joining in the North at Riva de Basio to sail under the
Rialto Bridge, before alighting at Salute to take in the breathtaking Basilica di Santa Maria.
FRESH PIZZA... AT PIZZERIA TRATTORIA ALL’ANFORA
Before boarding that ferry how about a
classic pizza? This simple, unpretentious
pizzeria offers in excess of 50 different
types of thin crust pizza. Recognisable from
its yellow tablecloths, aim for a table at the
rear in the quiet courtyard garden. Well
away from the tourist traps, it’s a great
pitstop whilst exploring some of the quieter
streets and campos. The pizza is plentiful,
well priced and super tasty, using herbs
and ingredients grown in the garden.

THE BEST GELATO… AT ALASKA GELATERIA
Of course being Italy there are numerous
options for gelato in the city but make sure
you seek out this little gem. Don’t be fooled
by the humble appearance, this is one of
Venice’s most renowned Gelateria and for
good reason!
There are a host of locations to take a Gondola
ride from, whilst the most easily found is at
San Marco and allows you to go under the
Bridge of Sighs. Don’t be put off venturing
further into the city to find some more scenic
tours including those that take you down the
Grand Canal.

Run by the legendary Carlo Pistacchi –
whose wit and charisma is matched only
by his ingenious flavour combinations and
passion for natural ingredients and
methods – he hand makes all of his gelato
on site in a tiny kitchen at the rear, and
whilst there will be some recognisable
flavours like vanilla, stracciatella and chocolate, be sure to sample his more creative offerings.
We were amazed by the ginger, rocket salad with orange, and fresh pear as well as being able
to sample the fresh pistachio (which he grinds by hand!) straight from the gelato machine.
