Sissinghurst Castle
There’s lots of reasons to visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden this winter.
As the garden closes for rest and conservation over the colder
months, we turn our attention to the hidden inside world created
by Vita and Harold here. Take the chance to explore their personal
literary havens, as you spiral past Vita’s library on a trip up the tower,
or pick up a timed ticket for a rare glimpse into Harold’s writing
refuge in the newly opened South Cottage.
Don’t forget to take in the changing seasonal exhibitions, then let off
steam with a restorative stroll across the wider estate – rounded off with
a cuppa and a slice of cake in the cosy restaurant. If you are planning a
visit in December too, book in for a festive two or three course lunch on
01580 710704.
The South Cottage
Rarely opened to the public, The South Cottage has long been the residence
of writers. Home to Vita and Harold’s bedrooms and Harold’s book room,
this atmospheric house sits in the middle of the garden and has enjoyed
the company of a variety of characters. Maintained as a writing haven by
the Nicolson family, step inside this literary retreat to learn more.
