Manor Farm is a 500 acre arable farm on New Barn Road, Southfleet owned and farmed by the Harris family since 1848 and home to Broadditch Farm Shop which opened it’ s doors in 1990. Broadditch has the philosophy‘ reduce your food miles, so your food tastes miles better’ supplying fresh homegrown produce direct from their own fields. Everything grown on the farm is grown traditionally with no added water or irrigation to gain maximum flavour. In 2001, Manor Farm joined the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, which encourages farmers to create and preserve the natural habitat which sixth generation Harris’, John and Mark still strive to protect and honour.
In addition to it’ s homegrown fare, the Farm Shop supports various local producers, stocking meat from Glover’ s Farm and Harvel House Farm, homemade pies from The Real Pie Company, cheese from Curd & Cure, eggs from Barradale, cakes from Country Cakes and Plaxtol Bakery, fresh bread from The Granary and much more.
Walking through the doors into the newly renovated Farm Shop is a delight to the lovers of quality food. Housed in a converted farm building by the farm gate it offers a little taste of the countryside to all.
Amid the expansion of the supermarket chains and a recession, farm shops like Broadditch have even more relevance in providing customers with fresh, locally sourced produce and as Mark and John advocate, focus should be on understanding where our food comes from, supporting local, and taking pride in our consumption.
