TRAVELLING BY PRIVATE AIRCRAFT
IS NO FLIGHT OF FANCY…
Jonathan Gordon, ABA Group
Hear the words 'private aircraft' and people think
of a Lord Sugar-type globetrotting tycoon. And
while there are plenty of rich individuals who own
their own jets, more people are using them for
holidays, leisure breaks or as a means of getting
to a holiday home.
Gone are the days when private air travel
was a choice between owning your own aircraft
and chartering; there are many options, but what’s
best for you? We asked Jonathan Gordon,
managing director of the Lydd-based Atlantic
Bridge Aviation Group.
“People are turning their backs on the hassle
of Heathrow and Gatwick in favour of the fast,
relaxed, exclusive world of private aviation. Just
getting through security and boarding at a large
airport can take hours, but with private flying,
screening is swift and you can be airborne in
minutes. Using a private aircraft means you wave
goodbye to queues.
“Sit back and relax in your own private
cabin, choose your own schedule, and arrive
refreshed in a fraction of the journey time. Private
aircraft can operate into more airfields than big
airliners, including smaller airports closer to your
final destination.”
But isn’t it horrendously expensive to fly
privately? Not so, says Jonathan.
Using an executive aircraft can be cost-effective
if you go for the right package. There are four
main options:
• Ad-hoc on-demand charter: Fully flexible, but
the most expensive
• Block-hours purchase: Flexible and less
expensive
• Fractional ownership: Flexible, more
commitment, many advantages
• Full ownership: Maximum commitment,
maximum benefits
ABA offers a low-cost fractional ownership
programme called AirShare. This means that
owning your own aircraft (or a share in one) that
can get you to most places in Europe can be
very affordable. At the entry level, you can buy
a one-eighth share in a cabin class aircraft from
as little as £25,000, entitling you to up to 40 days’
use a year.
Jonathan says: “AirShare is the perfect way
to get a taste for the freedom and luxury of owning
your own aircraft without having to buy your own
plane.”
