From the day the gallery opened, people have flocked to the town, from the local area, nationwide, and from abroad. In August 2013, the gallery welcomed its millionth visitor, several years before target, and has now hit 1.2 million visitors in three years. “Turner Contemporary has put this neglected seaside resort back on the map.” The Times, Cool Weekend Guide “Go to Margate and marvel...something magical has taken place.” Peter Bazalgette, Chair, Arts Council England In 2013 alone, Turner Contemporary welcomed 320,000 people, and 90% of visitors rated their visit as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’. So far, the prized venue has contributed an impressive £30 million into the local economy through tourism and inward investment, and over 35 new businesses have opened in the town, following a renewed vibrancy inspired by the gallery’s presence. The gallery is committed to making world-class art accessible to everyone. Learning is at the heart of Turner Contemporary. From school groups and teacher training, to community groups, families and visitors, it is intent on providing a fulfilling opportunity for all. In fact, 3% of the gallery's visitors had never been to a gallery before, while 45,000 adults and children have taken part in Turner's learning programme of events, and over 15,000 visitors have engaged in its public programme of performance, film screenings, talks and tours. 115 Now, with an exciting year ahead, with major exhibitions featuring work by Piet Mondrian and Jeremy Deller, there is certainly more to come for Turner Contemporary in 2015.
