groundbreaker, Saving Private Ryan. A World
War II drama about a search though war-torn
France after D-Day, the film was a mammoth hit
and later labelled one of the finest war films ever
made. Spielberg took home his second Oscar
for direction, whilst Hanks was nominated (again)
for best actor. Later that year, he also teamed
up with Meg Ryan to star in popular romantic
comedy, You've Got Mail.
Only eight years had passed since he had
moved to NYC, and already Hanks had made a
huge mark on the industry, and was now one of
Hollywood's most sought-after names. In the
year that followed, his A-list accolades continued,
when he reprised his role as the voice of Woody
in sequel, Toy Story 2 (1999), and starred in
Stephen King's fantastic prison adaptation, The
Green Mile. Both movies broke box office records
and marked the end of his fantastic 1990's reign.
Much like Philadelphia, Hanks underwent
a striking physical transformation for his role in
2000 blockbuster, Cast Away. A film that has
been long remembered, Hanks' portrayal of a
stranded man on a desert island, with Wilson
the volleyball as his only company, won him
another Oscar nomination for Best Actor. On
preparing for this role, he spoke about the
strenuous four months of constant vigilance to
transform his body. "I would do two hours a day
in the gym, doing nothing but a monotonous
kind of workout. That was formidable. You have
to power yourself through it almost by some sort
of meditation trickery. It's not glamorous."
In 2002, Hanks went on to produce the
comedic hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, with
his wife Rita Wilson, before later in the year being
honoured with the American Film Institute's
Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the
youngest actor ever to receive this accolade.
Over the next ten years, the same such
success continued. Hanks was now one of
