WHITSTABLE CASTLE & GARDENS

Independent Whitstable has always done things its own way. A town built on oysters harvested since Roman times, it was also where the Deane brothers set sail in 1829 to test their new diving helmet, and where, a year later, the Crab and Winkle Line began the world’ s first regular passenger railway service.

That inventive, autonomous streak still runs through the town. Weatherboarded cottages crowd the seafront lanes, colourful beach huts sit beneath the grassy slopes of Tankerton and fishing boats work from the harbour while artists, makers and one-off boutiques fill the streets behind it.
Where Kent’ s sandy resorts grew up around the traditional holidaymaker, Whitstable grew up around its oyster beds and boatyards; a difference that still shows. The town feels lived-in rather than polished, its shingle shores and sunsets over the Thames Estuary matched by a creative, unhurried energy still rooted in an intriguing working past.
“ What truly sets Whitstable apart from other seaside towns is its individuality. The town has maintained its unique personality through the independent small businesses lining the high street, including charming boutiques, vintage shops, art galleries, beautiful restaurants and wine bars. Whitstable exudes an enchanting oldworld charm that’ s unrivalled and ensures its visitors return time and time again.”
